TaDollies...not just for children
Amy and I have had the privilege of gifting two of our TaDollies (do you like the new name?) to some very special ladies. The first went to a Grandmother recovering from surgery. We thought she would enjoy something sweet to hold on to. She loved it! The second is on her way right now to a family member with alzheimer's. What a difficult thing for anyone to go through. This special lady enjoys seeing her name in writing, so I was more than happy to add her name to the skirt. We hope she will enjoy lots of hugs from this doll and that it brings a smile to her face.
What a sweet thing to do! My grandpa suffered from Alzheimer's for 15 - yes 15 - years. Toward the final stages of the disease, he loved to hold a little stuffed monkey that my mom gave him. He cradled it as if it were a baby. What a heartbreaking and sweet thing all at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI know your TaDollie (love the name by the way!) will bring Frances and the other sweet lady lots of comfort. Kindness is such a sweet emotion =)
My grandmother suffered too from Alzheimer's - such a devastating disease. She would have loved your creations as she had always loved hand embroidery when she was healthy.
ReplyDeleteCan I ask where you get your felted wool from? It is so beautiful. I haven't found anything in the flesh-tone colors around my area.
What a tough thing to see our loved ones go through. We were told that lots of the ladies where she lives carry around baby dolls. That need to nurture and give love is still there, even when most things are forgotten.
ReplyDeleteWe buy our wool blend felt from our favorite quilt shop, Eagle Creek Quilt Shop in Shakopee, MN. You have to rinse it a bajillion times before using it so it won't bleed later if it gets wet. Do you have a specialty quilt shop locally? I would say look for one that offers unique primitive crafting supplies like ours does. If you can't find anyone I'd be happy to pick some up and mail it to you. I think it's about $8/yd, the bolt isn't the usual 42"wide. e-mail me at tadacreations@gmail.com if you'd like to go that route.
Angel - My grandmother was placed in a special alzheimer's unit as her disease progressed. Her favorite thing was laundry. She would sit for hours and fold and refold towels and clothes. Funny the things that bring us comfort.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the felt. My daughter has her first loose tooth, so I'm in a HURRY to make her a little dolly with a pocket for the Tooth Fairy's first visit. I am going to scout out some quilt shops this weekend in search of felt. If I don't find anything, I'll let you know. Thank you for your kind offer. Angela :)
