Compassion in Kenya

You've probably read about the bloggers that were recently in Kenya, visiting Compassion International sponsored (and un-sponsored) children. It's pretty hard to miss.

I've always known that out of all the programs that help children in poorer nations, that Compassion was the best one. But I didn't know why exactly. I didn't truly understand what they did. I didn't truly understand the state of things in these countries. You hear the word "slum" and you imagine it, but how can you really understand it unless you see something like this. This time I couldn't just switch the channel and say "there's nothing I can do."

I remember when Pioneer Woman's husband and girls went to The Dominican with Compassion last year. I didn't really pay close attention to it. I didn't read every post, every word. This year it's different. I am different. I was ready to hear and see with a heart that could better understand. I think God opened my eyes at this time, to hear what he wanted to tell me.

Do you remember my post about our grocery budget? About feeling like $400 a month was too little for a family of 5? Well, we eventually found a way to increase it to $500, but we only really needed $450. I don't think that was a mistake. I think God was preparing us to realize we had more than enough, that we had extra. It takes just $38 a month to support a child through Compassion.

This week-end David and I read this post by Kristen of We are That Family. We were both so moved by it that together we made the decision to sponsor a child. And a couple of nights ago, with our kids, we sat down and chose the child we felt called to sponsor. He is 5 years old and lives in India with his mom (a widow) and grandfather. He had been waiting over 6 months for a sponsor. I was surprised that we didn't choose a child in Kenya, but God really laid this little boy on our hearts that night. And who were we to decide differently?

I later found this written on Kristen's blog too: "Did you know Compassion allows you to give family gifts to your sponsored child up to $1000 a year? Compassion International meets with the family to decide how the money should be spent...a new roof, beds, etc." We've also decided not to exchange gifts between ourselves for Christmas, we'll be sharing it with this little boy's family instead.

And shortly after, we watched this video. Kristen blogged about it here. It's an amazing story and you really should watch the whole thing. I don't think you'll think about sponsoring a child the same ever again.

A Birthday Dress and a Winner

I finished the Birthday dress just in time for gift wrapping. Whew!  I think she turned out purdy cute too.
What do you think?

It's the one in the middle. I love that she will coordinate with my girls. We'll have to get together this summer for a little photo shoot.  Maybe even at the Farm.

I only made this one 1" shorter than the others, but then I cinched up the neck a little so it won't fall off her shoulders, so that took it up another inch.  This dress is easy to play with , just by adjusting how much you do or don't cinch up the neck elastic.  When she gets bigger I'll just replace the elastic with a longer piece to make it fit a little longer for her.

I also wanted to show you how the ruffle looks when you finish it off with a narrow hem instead of a serger rolled hem.  I'm adding this pic to the tutorial too. !t still looks great!

Next up, what you've all been waiting for...

and the winner is (drumroll please)

Terri said:  "I love the fabrics of your dresses! I am always checking your blog for crafty inspriration or a new tute! My 2 year old daughter loves helping me "make" things! This would make a sweet little Easter dress!!"

Congratulations Terri!  E-mail me at tadacreations@gmail.com and I'll get this sweet dress sent out to you!

And a great BIG thank you to all who entered, for the wonderful comments y'all left. I wish I could make a dress for each and every one of your little girls.  *sigh* And I love that so many of you came out of hiding to say "Hi".  You should do it more often.  ;)  Comments always make my day!

Happy Friday!

Don't forget to enter my dress giveaway here. Today is the last day! I've really enjoyed reading all your entries. You all are so sweet and I have no doubt that this dress will find a lovely home with a sweet little girl to love it. I'll close comments at 9pm cst tonight and draw the winner Saturday morning with my girls. I'm not using the random number generator thingy this time because it seems like #1 never wins. So we'll be drawing entries out of a bowl, I figure that's as fair as I can make it.

*Oh, and if you aren't sure how to leave a comment, just e-mail me at tadacreations@gmail.com and I'll enter it for you.

Not much to report here accept that I'm still buried in laundry, at least it's all clean.

*I seriously have nothing more exciting to show you than my laundry pile.

I'm finally folding all the fabric that Allison decided she needed to cover herself in last week. Yep, it takes about a week to get to somethings.

Little man has a terrible head cold, his first ever I think. He's been pretty miserable, whimpering and wanting to be held a lot. So far he has passed it on to approx 1.5 people in our house. And there he goes again, drinking from his sister's sippy. I can't keep up with all the contaminated sippy cups around here. Oops, looks like he just got his first taste of chocolate milk and he's going back for more. I can't blame him.

Tonight David is bringing home Chinese take-out from Great Wall. We're ordering General Tso's which I find funny because I've never actually ordered it from a restaurant before. I've only made this fabulous recipe which we all love. So I'll get to see how it stacks up. We're also getting chicken and snow peas. Snow peas make me think of summer and that's a good thing.

It's another drizzly, misty, gloomy day here in MN. At least the snow is almost gone. We actually had a thunderstorm here earlier this week. It was strange to here thunder and still see snow outside.

Saturday we have a 4th Birthday party for my cousin's daughter. I'm making her a dress. It's almost 1:00 and I haven't started it yet. I better get on that, the party's at noon tomorrow.

Oh, and the girls Easter outfits are almost done. I'll share them with you after I add the ruffles to the pants and decide if the dresses need pockets. I wish I wasn't having such a difficult time finding shoes to go with them.

What are your plans for this week-end?

Her Collection

I've been noticing a trend here lately.

When I'm overrun in laundry (which is daily)

and the drawers and shelves become bare...this takes it's place.

It seems this pj cupboard has been bare for quite some time.

I've been wondering where a few of these things have been hiding.

We've taken to saying "I don't know where that is, check Allison's collection."

Little Piggies

I'm making save, spend and tithe banks for the girls. These little piggies are their save banks. I used the bird fabric from their room as inspiration. Next I'll be refashioning Crystal Light containers into their tithe banks. They've already got Disney princess banks for their spending money. I still need to get them each a little coin purse so they have something to carry their offering in, to church.

1. what I learned : drawing on a curved surface is rather tough
2. what I wish : that I had found all of these colors, tips and remover first
3. what I heard : mommy, you are so creative, wow, I love it (negating numbers 1 and 2)

Matthew 6:20 "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." NIV
